This year\u2019s refri\u00adge\u00adration confe\u00adrence in Troms\u00f8 became an arena where the industry was far more concerned than before about its own place in the global challenges facing the world. PTG CEO Terje Arnesen got to grips with this as early as his opening presentation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\u201cThe global challenges we face actually support our business model,\u201d he declared at the Norwegian Society of Refri\u00adge\u00adration gathering.<\/p>\n

He pointed to projec\u00adtions for the number of humans on the planet, from around eight billion today to 11 billion towards the end of this century. That created a number of challenges for most people, and the refri\u00adge\u00adration sector was no exception.<\/p>\n

Changes<\/strong><\/p>\n

Arnesen observed that the seas cover roughly 70 per cent of the planet, but no more than two per cent of humanity\u2019s food supplies derive from this huge area.<\/p>\n

PTG\u2019s business model is based on a strategy of devel\u00adoping technology and solutions which will help to improve food quality, create opport\u00adu\u00adnities for long storage life, and not least reduce wastage. The company does this by devel\u00adoping energy-efficient and sustai\u00adnable solutions using natural refri\u00adgerants, he explained.<\/p>\n

Using a series of slides, Arnesen empha\u00adsised that \u201cexpertise on refri\u00adge\u00adration technology is our backbone\u201d. That was unlikely to have taken his audience by surprise. But what undoubtedly made a number of them \u201cgreen\u201d with envy was what he had to say about the PTG school.<\/p>\n

That is because the company\u2019s philo\u00adsophy calls for appren\u00adtices to account for at least 10 per cent of the workforce. But this commitment does not stop there. PTG continues to give people internal opport\u00adu\u00adnities to pursue conti\u00adnuing and further education.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t believe we can secure people from the market with greater expertise than we\u2019ve already got, so we\u2019ve decided to train them ourselves,\u201d Arnesen said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn 2020\u201321, we actually recruited 85 new employees and have appointed another 14 so far this year. We are expanding sharply and will continue to do so. But we\u2019ll ensure that we retain the high level of expertise all our employees possess, and develop it further.\u201d<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Devel\u00adopment<\/strong><\/p>\n

He was otherwise concerned to ensure that PTG develops what he called \u201ctomorrow\u2019s solutions\u201d, and mentioned the company\u2019s colla\u00adbo\u00adration with shipping company Bluewild and ship design specialist Ulstein.<\/p>\n

These partners are aiming to develop a completely new and innovative trawler, and PTG has parti\u00adci\u00adpated right from the design phase. It has produced its designs in close colla\u00adbo\u00adration with the Bluewild, and thereby reaped broad user experience which the customer could utilise in the project.<\/p>\n

The refri\u00adge\u00adration solutions include the Super\u00adFreeze system (500 kW, \u201150\u00b0C) and two SeaCool units \u2013 a compact refri\u00adge\u00adrated seawater (RSW) system for efficient cooling of seawater and fish.<\/p>\n

On the innovation side, work is under way with salmon freezing, indivi\u00addually quick frozen (IQF) solutions, heat recovery, raw material handling, cryogenic separation and hydrolysis.<\/p>\n

\u201cKnowledge of the funda\u00admentals is needed to develop new products and solutions based on refri\u00adge\u00adration,\u201d Arnesen noted. \u201cThat calls for good under\u00adstanding of the customer\u2019s value creation, operation and potential, which is built up by our service technicians.\u201d<\/p>\n

Innovation and product devel\u00adopment involving engineers contribute to the company\u2019s parti\u00adci\u00adpation in emerging markets, he explained, while noting that several Norwegian industrial clusters are world leaders for their solutions and systems.<\/p>\n

Arnesen also empha\u00adsised that the company is committed to manufacturing in Norway, and called attention to its new investment in factory expansion and roboti\u00adsation at Malmefjorden.<\/p>\n

Broad-based<\/strong><\/p>\n

This year\u2019s confe\u00adrence was otherwise charac\u00adterised by a broad-based technical programme, and more than 300 parti\u00adci\u00adpants were not only a reflection that people wanted to meet up after two years of pandemic. They also sought profes\u00adsional refreshment, and got plenty of that.<\/p>\n

The first day was devoted to overall briefings as well as the society\u2019s annual general meeting. On day two, parti\u00adci\u00adpants divided into parallel sessions and were served solid expertise from the podium.
