The arm of PTG currently based in Malme\u00adfjorden north of Molde has been refining its technology since the late 1970s for appli\u00adcation to fish. Per Johansen, currently vice president sales at PTG Frionordica, was one of the three colle\u00adagues responsible. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Origi\u00adnally called Aquaterm and later FrioNordica, the company has built up compre\u00adhensive expertise with and experience of cooling and heating seawater over four decades.<\/p>\n

PTG Frionordica is currently part of PTG, with parent company Perfect Tempe\u00adrature Group also owning PTG Kulde\u00adteknisk, PTG Vest in Bergen, PTG Helgeland (previously Kj\u00f8le\u00adservice Helgeland) and PTG Multi\u00adkulde in Bod\u00f8.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Smolt <\/strong>
It all began when Johansen worked with Stein Magne \u00c5rseth and Erik Holm at Bols\u00f8nes Verft in Molde, which had been making refri\u00adge\u00adrated seawater (RSW) system for fishing boats since 1965. The yard was a pioneer in applying new refri\u00adge\u00adration technology to preserve the quality of herring and mackerel.<\/p>\n

A new period began for the yard in 1979 when it won the job of manufacturing a heat pump for a smolt plant run by S\u00e6ter Fiske\u00adopp\u00addrett in Sunndalen. This was the first unit of its kind for smolt production.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Bols\u00f8nes Verft went into liquidation in 1983, and Johansen, \u00c5rseth and Holm estab\u00adlished Aquaterm on the basis of the yard\u2019s heat-pump activity. They built a new factory and office building on the site, and had up to 30 employees at peak.<\/p>\n

A number of heat pumps and exchangers were built over time for smolt plants, and these became important products for Aquaterm. About 400 plants have been delivered so far, including a first delivery to Artec Aqua in 2003-04. This was installed at Bindals\u00adsmolt, part of the Sinkaberg-Hansen seafood company.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Up and down <\/strong>
Although the aquaculture industry has been very important for companies along the Norwegian coast, it has had many upturns and downturns. These also affected Aquaterm.<\/p>\n

The bankruptcy of the industry\u2019s FOS sales organi\u00adsation in 1991, combined with Norway\u2019s bank crisis, many life difficult for the company. The dawning bank crisis had also contri\u00adbuted to the failure of Bols\u00f8nes Verft in the early 1980s.<\/p>\n

Nevert\u00adheless, Aquaterm survived and eventually estab\u00adlished a colla\u00adbo\u00adration with Finsam in Grimstad. Per R Samuelsen at the latter had met Johansen when the pair were studying refri\u00adge\u00adration technology at the Norwegian Institute of Technology (NTH) in Trondheim.<\/p>\n

Finsam had been estab\u00adlished as early as 1965, and was renowned in the fishing industry worldwide for its leadership with a number of ice machine types and ice storage systems. Its inter\u00adna\u00adtional business allowed Aquaterm to become involved in purposeful exports. PTG Frionordica still has a department in Grimstad and a subsi\u00addiary in Chile.<\/p>\n

FrioNordica emerges<\/strong>
The first FrioNordica company was a joint venture between Aquaterm and Finsam Refri\u00adge\u00adration, estab\u00adlished as early as 2001 in Chile under the name Frionordica Refri\u00adge\u00adraci\u00f3n Limitada. It had offices in Puerto Montt and Conce\u00adpcion to provide local service for products from the two companies.<\/p>\n

Aquaterm and Finsam then estab\u00adlished a joint sales company called FrioNordica in 2006, and merged two years later under this name.<\/p>\n

FrioNordica has worked steadily to simplify, speed up and ratio\u00adnalise, giving priority always to devel\u00adoping its own products for salmon and fishing and for production in Norway. Key reasons for this have been short delivery times and control of quality.<\/p>\n

All production was therefore concen\u00adtrated in Molde during 2010, with manufacturing and the head office moving to new and modern premises in Malme\u00adfjorden the following year.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Qualified personnel <\/strong>
Molde has been known over more than 70 years for its large and highly qualified involvement in devel\u00adoping and building cranes. The offshore industry flourished from the late 1990s to 2014, making it difficult for FrioNordica to compete over qualified personnel in Molde. The supply of industrial sites was also limited there.<\/p>\n

So Johansen turned his attention to the neigh\u00adbouring local authority of Fr\u00e6na (now Hustadvika) and Malme\u00adfjorden. This is one of the biggest farming commu\u00adnities between Stavanger and Trondheim, and also hosts a number of industry and export companies such as Tine, Moxy Trucks and Hustadmarmor.<\/p>\n

Given this work culture and industrial background, it was easier to recruit able workers who suited FrioNordica there. More people, including residents of Molde, have now grasped the devel\u00adopment opport\u00adu\u00adnities offered by the seafood sector and PTG in Malmefjorden.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Big leap <\/strong>
\u201cProgress has been huge,\u201d reflects Johansen. \u201cBefore I retire, we\u2019ll have delivered heat pumps to our first fish farm. That\u2019s a big milestone for me, while this project gives PTG a unique opport\u00adunity to test its products in full scale.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re now building the energy system of tomorrow for land-based aquaculture here in Malme\u00adfjorden. These are large heat pumps by Norwegian standards. We\u2019ve made a big leap from the first heat pumps with an output of 60\u201370 kW which I helped to build more than 40 years ago to the Salmon Evolution units of 5 000\u20136 000 kW.\u201d<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
