PTG Kulde\u00adteknisk has been awarded a contract for the devel\u00adopment and delivery of cooling systems for particle detectors at CERN in Switzerland. <\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\u201cThis is one of the most special cooling purposes we have ever had,\u201d says technical manager Frode Berg. <\/strong><\/p>\n

PTG Kulde\u00adteknisk long experience with CO2 as a refri\u00adgerant was empha\u00adsized when CERN chose a supplier.<\/p>\n

Particle accele\u00adrator
\n<\/strong>Particle accele\u00adrators use elect\u00adrical power to move elect\u00adri\u00adcally charged particles at high speeds close to the speed of light. The purpose of the largest particle accele\u00adrators is to study the interac\u00adtions of the particles as they collide with each other in order to probe the mysteries of the universe. The<\/p>\n

Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN is the world\u2019s largest and most powerful particle accele\u00adrator. It runs in a 27-kilometer circular tunnel on the border between France and Switzerland, and is equipped with four large particle detectors situated around the ring. These are very sophi\u00ads\u00adti\u00adcated devices that measure the properties of particles emerging from the collisions.<\/p>\n

Large energy require\u00adments require cooling
\n<\/strong>Thousands of silicon sensors are at the core of the two largest LHC detectors \u2013 ATLAS and CMS. They dissipate up to a few-hundred kW during operation, but in order to minimize damage induced by the high-energy particles from the colli\u00adsions, they must also be kept at tempe\u00adra\u00adtures well below 0 \u00b0C.<\/p>\n

Two-phase pumped loops of CO2 are used in the core of the detectors to remove the dissi\u00adpated heat and keep the sensors cold. Until now traditional chillers operating synthetic refri\u00adgerants have been used to cool down the CO2 pumped to the detector. For the next generation of detectors, it has been decided to migrate towards natural refri\u00adgerants for these \u201cupstream\u201d chillers.<\/p>\n

CO2 comes into its own
\n<\/strong>There are many special challenges with this plant that require special solutions. CERN already uses CO2 as a refri\u00adgerant and was deter\u00admined to focus on a solution with this refri\u00adgerant. Require\u00adments for tempe\u00adra\u00adtures below \u201150\u00baC and pipe systems going 100m into the ground are some of the technical reasons for choosing the refri\u00adgerant. These are coupled to CERN\u2019s global strategy of reducing the organization\u2019s environ\u00admental footprint.<\/p>\n

Designed and manufactured in Troms\u00f8
\n<\/strong>PTG has production of tempe\u00adrature and energy solutions both in Troms\u00f8 and in Malme\u00adfjorden (Molde). It is with PTG Kulde\u00adteknisk in Troms\u00f8 that these special plants are designed and manufactured. According to project manager Martin Corne\u00adli\u00adussen, work is now underway on designing the system, and delivering the first rigs are to be completed in the beginning of 2020.<\/p>\n

Close coope\u00adration with the client and NTNU
\n<\/strong>Devel\u00adopment Manager at PTG Kulde\u00adteknisk Yves Ladam has worked closely with the client and NTNU to solve the special challenges. According to Yves Ladam, the facilities consist of several non-traditional solutions that have not been used before. A fruitful colla\u00adbo\u00adration so far.<\/p>\n

CERN
\n<\/strong>The European Organization for Nuclear Research is an inter\u00adna\u00adtional organi\u00adsation for particle physics research. CERN\u2019s opera\u00adtions are concen\u00adtrated on particle physics and comprise the world\u2019s largest research centre in these disciplines.<\/p>\n

The centre is located on Swiss-French border near Geneva airport. At the research centre is the Large Hadron Collider, a huge particle accele\u00adrator that has been the Laboratory\u2019s flagship facility since research began there in 2010.<\/p>\n

CERN was estab\u00adlished in 1954 by 12 countries in Europe. Today, the organization has over 20 member countries, around 2,600 full-time employees plus nearly 14,000 scien\u00adtists and engineers from over 500 univer\u00adsities and 80 nations.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The contract for the devel\u00adopment and delivery of cooling systems for particle detectors at CERN in Switzerland is a very exciting project for PTG. <\/span><\/span>Project manager Martin Corne\u00adli\u00adussen (left) and project engineer Cato Kristi\u00adansen are respon\u00adsible for the project.
