Located deep inside Friar\u00adfjord, we find Lakse\u00adfjord \u2013 the facility that produces all the smolt for Ler\u00f8y Aurora\u2019s food fish opera\u00adtions in Northern Norway. In 2025, an extensive moder\u00adni\u00adsation of the energy instal\u00adla\u00adtions has been carried out, replacing several older systems.<\/p>\n

A key part of the project has been the transition from flow-through systems to recir\u00adcu\u00adlating aquaculture systems (RAS) in parts of the facility.
\u2013 This has been a large and complex project, and a close colla\u00adbo\u00adration between Ler\u00f8y Aurora and PTG Kulde\u00adteknisk, says Rune S. Olsen, Project Manager at PTG Kuldeteknisk.<\/p>\n

Improved fish welfare with tempe\u00adrature control<\/strong>
Tempe\u00adrature regulation has been a major driver behind the upgrade. In Arctic regions, this is a parti\u00adcu\u00adlarly critical factor \u2013 both in terms of energy consumption and fish welfare.
\u2013 Good tempe\u00adrature control is essential for fish welfare, and robust smolt also leads to better growth later in life, says Gaute Andreas S\u00f8rflaten, Project Manager for the upgrade at Ler\u00f8y Aurora Lakse\u00adfjord, and continues:
\u2013 In Northern Norway, fresh\u00adwater is extremely cold most of the year. By switching from flow-through systems to RAS, the need for heating is signi\u00adfi\u00adcantly reduced.<\/p>\n

The transition to RAS technology makes it possible to recir\u00adculate 96\u201399 percent of the water. Less intake of cold water therefore contri\u00adbutes to lower energy consumption related to heating.
The transition to direct-acting heat pumps also contri\u00adbutes to more efficient energy use.
\u2013 Today, energy is relatively inexpensive in Northern Norway, but this can change quickly. That is why it is crucial for us to choose energy-efficient technology, S\u00f8rflaten explains.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

80,000 operating hours \u2013 minimal mainte\u00adnance<\/strong>
Ler\u00f8y Aurora have colla\u00adbo\u00adrated with both PTG Kulde\u00adteknisk and PTG Frionordica for years. The upgrade hence builds on experi\u00adences stret\u00adching back more than two decades.
\u2013 We purchased our first heat pump back in 2001 and have since had several models from PTG Frionordica, says Maren Charlotte B\u00f8, Procurement Manager at Ler\u00f8y Aurora.
\u2013 Some of the pumps have operated for more than 80,000 hours with minimal mainte\u00adnance. When choosing a supplier again, the decision was easy, S\u00f8rflaten adds.<\/p>\n

The delivery included four new Frionordica HP heat pumps, installed and delivered by PTG Kulde\u00adteknisk. A FrioEco heat pump has also been installed to ensure the correct tempe\u00adrature in the hatchery.
S\u00f8rflaten further explains that there has been a desire to standardise the technology at the facility, both to ensure high uptime and better redun\u00addancy.
\u2013 When we have one type of system, we reduce both the need for spare parts and inventory-related costs. This results in more robust opera\u00adtions and is both more sustai\u00adnable and more reliable.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Strict sustai\u00adna\u00adbility require\u00adments<\/strong>
The Lakse\u00adfjord project has undoubtedly been extensive.
\u2013 Energy systems and heat recovery have been delivered to four depart\u00adments, including engineering and design of water systems and automation solutions. The delivery also includes heat pumps, heat recovery exchangers, valves, CIP and pump systems, as well as automation control panels for monitoring and control, says Project Manager Olsen at PTG Kuldeteknisk.<\/p>\n

Enoksen at PTG Kulde\u00adteknisk describes the delivery as a clear example of Ler\u00f8y Aurora\u2019s ambitions:
\u2013 Ler\u00f8y Aurora sets clear require\u00adments for technology, fish welfare, and sustai\u00adna\u00adbility. The Lakse\u00adfjord project is a strong example of this.<\/p>\n

The choice of supplier was also based on these require\u00adments:
