A new research and innovation station being built by Akvaplan-niva on Kval\u00f8ya outside Troms\u00f8 will be able to achieve perfect water tempe\u00adra\u00adtures courtesy of PTG. That helps in cracking the code when seeking to farm new marine species.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Since its foundation in 1984, Akvaplan-niva has offered environ\u00admental consul\u00adtancy services and research related to aquaculture and the aquatic environment. Its Kraknes station near the north Norwegian city of Troms\u00f8 conducts experi\u00admental work with marine species, and it holds farming licences for more than 130 of these.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019d have to search closely to find a species from northern waters which isn\u2019t on this list,\u201d says Trond Ivarjord, section manager at the Kraknes research and innovation station, better known as Fisk from the acronym for its Norwegian name. Helpfully, this also means \u201cfish\u201d.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Help to begin<\/strong>
\n\u201cWe work at the interface between research and commer\u00adcia\u00adli\u00adsation, often with companies in a start-up phase which need support to get the wheels turning,\u201d Ivarjord explains. \u201cWe can help them to begin production on a small scale.\u201d<\/p>\n

He points to specific projects on farming such species as kelp, cod, lumpfish and spotted wolffish. And stable water tempe\u00adra\u00adtures represent an important requirement when resear\u00adching new candi\u00addates for commercial rearing.<\/p>\n

They are necessary for ensuring not only that each trial in a series is compa\u00adrable, but also that the fish being studied will grow and be assured of good welfare conditions.<\/p>\n

\u201cCod and wolffish roe, for example, are very sensitive to excessive tempe\u00adra\u00adtures,\u201d says Ivarjord. \u201cIf the water\u2019s too warm, larvae and fry could die or become deformed.<\/p>\n

\u201cUp here in the far north, seawater has an autumn tempe\u00adrature of 9\u201310\u00b0C . We can\u2019t use that, even if we extract it from a depth of 60 metres. We\u2019re then utterly dependent on being able to cool down the water to 5\u20136\u00b0C and keeping it there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Efficient and reliable tempe\u00adrature management is therefore extremely important for Fisk, and this was given great emphasis when designing its new research station.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Advanced and complex<\/strong>
\n\u201cThe plant we\u2019ve now estab\u00adlished is techni\u00adcally advanced and highly complex,\u201d reports Raymond Enoksen. He is a sales engineer and project developer at PTG \u2013 Perfect Tempe\u00adrature Group, which has supplied climate technology for the new station.<\/p>\n

This forms part of a water treatment and process facility delivered together with Unik Filter\u00adsystem \u2013 the turnkey contractor for the complete plant \u2013 as well as Preplaset, Alde Akva and Eltro.<\/p>\n

\u201cThree different water tempe\u00adra\u00adtures are to be kept constant throughout the year and under all operating conditions,\u201d explains Enoksen. \u201cThat calls for a lot of energy, and 80 per cent of this is recovered by waste heat exchangers \u2013 in other words, water pumped into the station swaps heat with both hot and cold waste water.<\/p>\n

\u201cAn important part of our delivery is two SeaCool CO2<\/sub> heat pumps working directly against seawater. In other words, the intake water is in direct contact with the evapo\u00adrator and condenser in the heat pumps.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat saves both energy and space, since we don\u2019t need to install a secondary circuit. In addition, CO2<\/sub> is a natural refri\u00adgerant without documented negative effects on the environment.\u201d<\/p>\n

He adds that, in addition to delivering climate solutions, PTG has been respon\u00adsible for extensive automation between the various systems in order to ensure that everything works together properly.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Extensive trial operation<\/strong>
\nStability in every operating phase is also important. Even though the new plant has just been handed over from the developer to Fisk, extensive trials remain to be run before the process plant is ready for use.<\/p>\n

Rune Skogly Olsen, PTG\u2019s project manager, reports that priority is given to the survival and welfare of the fish, with great attention concen\u00adtrated on stability.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fish must be able to survive a possible long-lasting power cut, for example. All circuits therefore have a double set of critical compo\u00adnents \u2013 known as redun\u00addancy \u2013 and power supplied by emergency generators priori\u00adtises those elements which ensure fish survival.\u201d<\/p>\n

Preli\u00adminary tests show that the plant can also be run at almost full capacity on emergency power, he adds.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s inter\u00ade\u00adsting and exciting to be able to contribute to a plant with the ambitions which Akvaplan-niva has for Fisk. Through our delivery, we\u2019re helping to enable research on Arctic marine species for commercial devel\u00adopment of the aquaculture industry.\u201d<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
