Climate expertise for reducing energy consumption and green\u00adhouse gas (GHG) emissions is being contri\u00adbuted by PTG for an expansion in X\u2011ray and catering capacity at the University Hospital of North Norway (UNN).<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

With its head office in the north Norwegian city of Troms\u00f8, PTG \u2013 Perfect Tempe\u00adrature Group \u2013 comprises a nationwide and increas\u00adingly inter\u00adna\u00adtional team of experts in refri\u00adge\u00adration technology. It supports both commercial and public-sector enter\u00adprises in switching to more environment-friendly solutions.<\/p>\n

Climate-friendly X\u2011ray expansion<\/strong>
\nRanked among enter\u00adprises reliant on stable energy supplies, the UNN\u2019s current acqui\u00adsition of several additional X\u2011ray machines also calls for an expansion in the capacity of its cooling systems.<\/p>\n

PTG\u2019s Troms\u00f8 team is therefore in full swing with upgrading the hospital\u2019s climate system to ensure that the new equipment functions as it should.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday\u2019s solution utilises the synthetic refri\u00adgerant medium R\u2011407c, which is now being replaced with a natural medium,\u201d explains Martin Corne\u00adli\u00adussen, PTG\u2019s project manager for this assignment. \u201cUnlike such synthetic media, natural refri\u00adgerants like CO2<\/sub>, ammonia and propane have low or no documented negative effects on the environment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Propane has been selected for the X\u2011ray department. This relatively new refri\u00adgerant is experi\u00adencing increased demand because of its environment-friend\u00adliness, broad appli\u00adca\u00adbility and good heating effect.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile the previous instal\u00adlation had a global warming potential (GWP) of 1 774, the new propane facility is rated at three,\u201d Corne\u00adli\u00adussen reports. \u201cAt the same time, this gas has an ozone depletion potential (ODP) of zero.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn other words, the replacement project will have a signi\u00adficant environ\u00admental effect for the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

3 600 meals per day<\/strong>
\nAt the same time, the UNN is renovating the kitchen it uses to produce about 3 600 meals per day for patients. In addition to the cooking facilities, this entity embraces 14 refri\u00adge\u00adrated rooms and a freezer room.<\/p>\n

When the renovated instal\u00adla\u00adtions are ready in the summer of 2023, they will be far more environment-friendly and energy-efficient than before.<\/p>\n

Stian Olsen, project manager for PTG\u2019s delivery of refri\u00adge\u00adration and freezer systems here, reports that reducing food deterioration is not the only consideration.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re upgrading the UNN\u2019s old ice-water plant and installing a CO2<\/sub> freezer. These units will cool down the refri\u00adge\u00adrated and freezer rooms in a very energy-efficient and space-saving manner.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn addition, we\u2019re capturing surplus heat for use elsewhere in the hospital. That ensures no energy is wasted, and we achieve much lower energy consumption than before\u201d, Olsen explains<\/p>\n

While the plants in the new kitchen facility will collectively deliver 77 kilowatt-hours for cooling, up to 120 kWh in surplus energy will be trans\u00adferred as heat directly to the indoor climate system.<\/p>\n

Green transition in practice<\/strong>
\n\u201cThe CO2<\/sub> plant has a global warming potential (GWP) of one and a ozone depletion potential (ODP) of zero,\u201d Olsen says. \u201cBy compa\u00adrison, the system we\u2019re replacing had a GWP of no less than 3 922.\u201d<\/p>\n

In other words, reduced heat loss, minimal space require\u00adments, and natural and safe input factors with an eye to food production mean a signi\u00adficant reduction in the kitchen\u2019s total environ\u00admental footprint \u2013 or the green transition in practice, as PTG puts it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe see that what we do has a concrete effect,\u201d observes Olsen. \u201cWe were early off the mark in turning our attention to environment-friendly climate technology, and have therefore built up strong and broad expertise with natural refrigerants.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat benefits both our customers and the environment.
