The green shift, salmon tax and strengt\u00adhening vocational education were in the spotlight when Jan Christian Vestre, minister of trade and industry, visited PTG\u2019s factory in Troms\u00f8 on 8 November. The Labour Party politician received important input on these and other issues from the air conditioning and refri\u00adge\u00adration specialist.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

PTG \u2014 the Perfect Tempe\u00adrature Group \u2014 has its head office in Troms\u00f8, but comprises a nationwide and now inter\u00adna\u00adtional team of cooling and refri\u00adge\u00adration specia\u00adlists. Its business model is about reducing green\u00adhouse gas emissions and making energy consumption more efficient.<\/p>\n

Vestre paid a visit to PTG following his parti\u00adci\u00adpation at the Agenda North Norway meeting. Before the meeting, his ministry had already been showing interest in the group\u2019s contri\u00adbution to the green transition.<\/p>\n

Production in Norway<\/strong>
\n\u201cOur 272 employees pursue the green shift every day in practice by advising, installing and providing service for private and public customers who want to adopt more environment-friendly cooling and refri\u00adge\u00adration technology,\u201d said PTG chair Anders H\u00f8if\u00f8dt during the visit.<\/p>\n

Set to exceed a turnover of NOK 900 million this year, the group is bucking the trend by manufacturing environment-friendly technology in Troms\u00f8 and Molde. That interested Vestre very much, and national value creation quickly became a topic.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\u201cWe produce by and large all our systems in-house to meet the quality required by our customers,\u201d explained Frode Berg, technical head at PTG. \u201cThat means we constantly learn and improve, we develop and retain internal expertise, and we strengthen our drive and competitiveness.\u201d<\/p>\n

Worrying salmon tax<\/strong>
\nDuring his guided tour of PTG\u2019s production facilities in Troms\u00f8, Vestre also learnt of the group\u2019s concern about the resource rent tax on the aquaculture sector being intro\u00adduced by the government.<\/p>\n

About 60 per cent of revenues at PTG derive from fish farming and fishing-related industry, and it has clearly seen that the tax proposal is also affecting the willingness to invest in green solutions.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe expect to experience continued growth,\u201d H\u00f8if\u00f8dt told an attentive minister. \u201cBefore the news broke about the resource rent tax, we were consi\u00addering an expansion in capacity at our Malme\u00adfjorden factory.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the planned tax increase has created great uncer\u00adtainty about the ability to invest in the aquaculture sector, associated industries and local coastal commu\u00adnities. That\u2019s why we must now unfor\u00adtu\u00adnately reassess our own capital spending and expansion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Strengt\u00adhening vocational training<\/strong>
\nAnother major challenge PTG shared with Vestre was the availa\u00adbility of skilled employees. The group, which has recruited more than 100 new personnel since 2020, maintains that the commitment to vocational training at upper secondary level in Norway is inadequate.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe find that vocational courses are being dropped for financial reasons based on the number of appli\u00adcants alone,\u201d explained Berg. \u201cThe refri\u00adge\u00adration sector is suffering as a result. Although the companies involved are small when viewed in isolation, they play an important role in the overall picture. Norway would be unable to export a single fish without us, for example.\u201d<\/p>\n

His comments received support from Liv Mona Arntzen, PTG\u2019s human resources and quality assurance head.<\/p>\n

\u201cSuch short-term financial consi\u00adde\u00adra\u00adtions hit compe\u00adti\u00adti\u00adveness, both here and for the nation,\u201d she told Vestre. \u201cWe therefore want a closer colla\u00adbo\u00adration between industry, county councils and central government in planning tomorrow\u2019s educa\u00adtional provision. The aim is to highlight the industry\u2019s prospects and educate the skilled personnel required by the labour market.\u201d<\/p>\n

Estab\u00adlishing own school<\/strong>
\nWhere PTG is concerned, the primary craftsmen involved are refri\u00adge\u00adration and heating techni\u00adcians. The group currently has 22 appren\u00adtices and recently concen\u00adtrated training activities in its own in-house school. This aims to entrench expertise enhan\u00adcement all the way from apprentice to engineer in the industry\u2019s own challenges.<\/p>\n

Ola T P Landsverk, who has been appointed to head the PTG school, told Vestre that much is to be gained by thinking both diversity in recruitment and internal expertise development.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re inspired by the way apprentice masters traditio\u00adnally took respon\u00ads\u00adi\u00adbility for their trainees,\u201d he explained. \u201cThey shared not only their knowledge, but also their skills, experience and valuable reflections.\u201d<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
