\u201cI usually say to our people that they can be involved in creating their own future here \u2013 and that\u2019s proved true in practice,\u201d says Steinar Dale, production manager at PTG Frionordica.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis attitude produces huge enthusiasm and a good working environment. You could almost say that everything we work with here involves elements of innovation. We\u2019re intro\u00adducing new things all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The company has been located in Malme\u00adfjorden between Elnes\u00adv\u00e5gen and Molde since moving from the latter town in 2011. Dale came on board in 2015, and has worked, thought, slept and eaten with its business ever since.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

He certainly acknow\u00adledges the impor\u00adtance of being a rounded individual, with a family, leisure time and all that they involve. All the same, he reflects, being so involved with something which carries so much weight for you perso\u00adnally means you think about the job almost around the clock. He sounds almost surprised at reaching this self-awareness.<\/p>\n

Unpolished diamond<\/strong>
\n\u201cI saw at an early stage that this company was what you might call an \u2018unpolished diamond\u2019, and we\u2019ve been on an incre\u00addibly exciting journey during my years here,\u201d says Dale.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve gone from an annual turnover of NOK 50\u201370 million to around NOK 220\u2013250 million now. So it\u2019s not surprising that we quickly outgrew our production premises and had to extend them. Luckily, there\u2019s plenty of space here and that gives us the room to expand further.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked what form the company\u2019s innovation takes, Dale says it pursues research and devel\u00adopment virtually all the time. \u201cThis is about improving manufacturing techniques, of course, and the latest advance has involved investing in two robots able to both weld and prepare certain parts of the production process.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese jobs are very demanding and take a long time to do properly. The new devices, which everyone here is very pleased with, save lots of time and money. I\u2019m also sure they\u2019ll help to reduce the physical load on our personnel.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dale says the company regards its takeover by PTG as a huge advantage. \u201cPerhaps the most important reason is that it leaves us in peace. We\u2019re allowed to exactly what we feel is right, which naturally provides additional inspiration.<\/p>\n

\u201cMoreover, it\u2019s both reassuring and stimu\u00adlating to have such a big group behind us. We\u2019re aware that capital is available to do what\u2019s necessary to make further progress, while the resources we get access to through PTG are also a support.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ice and heat<\/strong>
\nDale explains that PTG Frionordica produces equipment for ice production in exactly the quantities required by the fishing vessels which use it.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd the refri\u00adge\u00adrated seawater (RSW) heat pumps we build are constantly being enhanced with new innova\u00adtions which allow us to deliver equipment our customers can make money from using. We \u2013 or at least the equipment we supply \u2013 are part of the fish production chain along the whole Norwegian coast. That\u2019s good to reflect on.\u201d<\/p>\n

He describes the plant expansion in 2019\u201320 as crucial because it laid the basis for achieving the organic growth which the owner was looking for.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the same time, it meant a great deal for the local community. As I mentioned earlier, this is about something more than \u2018simply\u2019 working in a factory. The extra 400 square metres we gained has provided a foundation for our continued growth \u2013 in a positive way.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur investment in robot technology means that this expansion can continue \u2013 with the same workforce as before. In other words, nobody\u2019s been made redundant by starting up our two robots. And there\u2019s an extra value in working for a company which thinks as much about the personnel as it does about the bottom line.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dale reports that PTG Frionordica currently has 44 employees and 14 temporary hires. \u201cThat\u2019s because it\u2019s difficult to predict how many permanent personnel we will need at any time. But we\u2019re constantly working to create more predicta\u00adbility, greater solidity in the company, and not least space for conti\u00adnuous research and development.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we do here, after all, is really high-end technology and in a field where advances move rapidly. Since we work with pressurised equipment, too, a good deal of certi\u00adfi\u00adcation also needs to be in place.<\/p>\n

\u201cFortu\u00adnately, we\u2019ve recruited a number of employees with a background in the oil and shipping sectors. This is worth its weight in gold for us, because we can combined solid experience with innovation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why everyone in the district feels they\u2019re involved in building a future. We see how people feel they should look within themselves to find new opport\u00adu\u00adnities. People reflect on how they can improve. You can\u2019t buy an attitude like that for money. It has to be developed \u2013 and we have to do that together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Local commitment<\/strong>
\nWhen asked how the company will continue to ensure that enough people are available to meet the level of production demanded by both market and owner, Dale accepts that \u201cenough people\u201d would undoubtedly be the challenge for the future.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs I mentioned earlier, we have largely recruited locally and aim to continue doing so. It has a value in itself. So I was very concerned to see where \u2018conversion\u2019 to a PTG company would lead.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I\u2019ve never seen a transition which has gone as smoothly as this one. All the employees were allowed to parti\u00adcipate in influ\u00adencing the process, with the result that everyone feels themselves to be a \u2018PTGer\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

Describing the group as an rallying point, he says the company\u2019s workforce feels proud of the brand. \u201cWe\u2019ve clearly retained our history but are conti\u00adnuing to build together. And our two new colle\u00adagues in the shape of the robots, who can work around the clock if needed, means we feel we\u2019ve taken yet another step forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dale laughs at the sugge\u00adstion that everyone who is in his position probably says the same. \u201cI won\u2019t comment on that. But I know this district, and not least the life circums\u00adtances and attitudes of every person in this company. We\u2019ve been given a unique position to build a high-tech company in a small local community, and most people can certainly work here too.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough we\u2019ve perhaps grown up a bit quickly a few times, and faced the challenges that poses, we\u2019ve also experi\u00adenced the strength provided by solidarity and the sense of liberation which comes with backing from a large and strong group. Backstory<\/strong>
\nThe part of PTG currently based in Malme\u00adfjorden has concen\u00adtrated its technology since the late 1970s on appli\u00adca\u00adtions for fish. It all began with the production of RSW plants and heat pumps in a shed at the Bols\u00f8nes Verft yard in Molde.<\/p>\n
