A project aimed at finding refri\u00adgerant alter\u00adna\u00adtives to R22, ammonia and hydro\u00adfluo\u00adro\u00adcarbons was the starting point for extending CO2<\/sub> to the maritime sector. Pursued with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and its Sintef research arm, this work targeted coasters\/fishing vessels with capacities up to 500 cubic metres. \u201cCustomers have many different motives for seeking such options, and we\u2019ve tried to respond to them all,\u201d says Yves Ladam, devel\u00adopment manager at PTG.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

He was clear enough about the group\u2019s motiva\u00adtions when presenting these solutions to an attentive audience at the recent CoolFish meeting in \u00c5lesund.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Ladam noted that a number of customers were reluctant to use ammonia because it is toxic, and many also lacked the space for a separate engine room. Another motivating factor for those involved with HFC-R22 systems was problems posed by expensive leaks.<\/p>\n

SeaCo2<\/sub>ol RSW<\/strong>
\nThese consi\u00adde\u00adra\u00adtions prompted PTG to begin devel\u00adoping an alter\u00adnative approach, which reached the prototype stage in 2010. It was initially intended to replace R22 instal\u00adla\u00adtions, but a full product range called for further research and devel\u00adopment work lasting until 2016.<\/p>\n

In his presen\u00adtation, Ladam reviewed the group\u2019s journey since launching the project and referred to its 240 megawatt facility on B\u00e5ragutt. This included a flooded evapo\u00adrator, a specially constructed oil separator and four Dorin compressors.<\/p>\n

However, it turned out to be heavy and relatively expensive \u2013 as well as complex compared with ammonia (NH3) and HCF options. Work was therefore initiated to cut costs.<\/p>\n

The result was what Ladam called the \u201cmodern SeaCo2<\/sub>ol\u201d solution for CO2<\/sub>, comprising a low-pressure receiver (LPR) with around 15 per cent liquid out to the evapo\u00adrator, a liquid ejector and the TEX evapo\u00adrator from PTG Frionordica. It has a 150 kilowatt compressor but no oil separator, helping to cut generator weight, enhance cost efficiency and reduce complexity. About 40 of these units have been delivered, and more are on order.<\/p>\n

Super\u00adFreeze<\/strong>
\nCO2<\/sub> can also be used in Super\u00adFreeze plants for fish, and Ladam took the opport\u00adunity to talk a little about PTG\u2019s solutions here as well. The group delivers what he calls transcri\u00adtical CO2<\/sub> plants to an industrial standard.<\/p>\n

These facilities have a freezing capacity of up to 60 tonnes per day, and utilise pump-circu\u00adlated refri\u00adgerant for reducing product tempe\u00adrature on board to \u201150\u00b0C.<\/p>\n

Asked why PTG believes that customers want such plants, Ladam refers back to his expla\u00adnation that they want to avoid expensive leaks with other refri\u00adgerants and that ammonia is toxic.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s also the case that a lot of them lack the physical space for a separate engine room. A CO2<\/sub> instal\u00adlation will moreover provide faster freezing and is compact \u2013 a feature many want. The prototype for this solution was first delivered in 2014, and can also be supplied in a variant with combined refri\u00adge\u00adrated seawater (RSW) and freezing.\u201d<\/p>\n

He confirms that PTG has also used a classic booster layout in a two-stage plant, with oil return from the \u201150\u00b0C tank. \u201cWe thereby achieve efficient freezing and defrosting, along with the compact solution offering low mainte\u00adnance costs. And a natural refri\u00adgerant is used.\u201d<\/p>\n

Innovation<\/strong>
\nIn conclusion, Ladam mentioned the innovative trawler now being intro\u00adduced by Ulstein with technology from PTG. Ordered by the Bluewild fishing company in May 2021, this vessel incor\u00adpo\u00adrates highly inter\u00ade\u00adsting refri\u00adge\u00adration facilities \u2013 Super\u00adFreeze (500 kW, \u201150\u00b0C), SeaCo2<\/sub>ol, brine freezing, indivi\u00addually quick-freezing (IQF) and heat recovery.<\/p>\n

Ladam says experience with CO2<\/sub> plants on vessels has so far been fairly varied. \u201cThe demand is for large and stable levels of fish processing. Minor and what we might call trivial problems can create a lot of bother \u2013 the threat of leaks means that strict require\u00adments are set for finding the right seals.<\/p>\n

\u201cSourcing compo\u00adnents can also be a problem. We use large transcri\u00adtical compressors, big titanium heat exchangers and so forth. New compo\u00adnents may have teething problems, and oil recir\u00adcu\u00adlation presents conta\u00admi\u00adnation problems. And this is a relatively complex solution, which can be a challenge in itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also notes that CO2 may be non-toxic but does present a risk of suffo\u00adcation in certain circums\u00adtances, and that PTG takes this very seriously.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe therefore syste\u00adma\u00adti\u00adcally install two CO2<\/sub> detectors in both engine room and factory area, along with powerful venti\u00adlation systems. Customers also receive start-up training.\u201d<\/p>\n

Backstory<\/strong>
\nPTG Kulde\u00adteknisk was founded in 2003 by Tor Vangberg and Frode Berge with four other former colle\u00adagues. It has subse\u00adquently been a pioneer in devel\u00adoping environment-friendly refri\u00adge\u00adration technology, parti\u00adcu\u00adlarly based on CO2<\/sub>.<\/p>\n

Since starting up, the company has supplied its innovative CO2<\/sub> refri\u00adge\u00adration plants with energy recovery to all the large Norwegian grocery chains \u2013 including Coop, Rema, Norges\u00adgruppen and Ica.<\/p>\n

It went on in 2011 to deliver the world\u2019s first RSW plant with CO2<\/sub> as the refri\u00adgerant for cooling seawater on a purse seiner.<\/p>\n

The company won an initial contract covering a transcri\u00adtical freezing plant for the maritime segment in 2014. That year and next, it built and tested a full-scale pilot facility with CO2<\/sub> as the refri\u00adgerant on freezer trawler Roaldnes for Nordic Wildfish.<\/p>\n

CoolFish<\/strong>
\nFunded by the Research Council of Norway\u2019s large-scale programme for energy research (EnergiX) and industrial partners, the CoolFish project aims to help develop energy-efficient and climate-friendly systems for refri\u00adge\u00adration and heat production on fishing vessels.<\/p>\n

It is headed by Kristina N Widell at Sintef Ocean and has Sintef Energi and the NTNU as research partners. Industry backers include MMC First Process, Bluewild, Selv\u00e5g Senior\/S\u00f8rheim Holding, \u00d8yangen, Gasnor, Danfoss, PTG \u2014 Perfect Tempe\u00adrature Group and Isotherm Inc.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
