When Mikael Andersen from Steigen recently stepped down as CEO of refri\u00adge\u00adration technology specialist PTG Multi Kulde, another native of the same local authority near Bod\u00f8 was ready to step in. \u201cBod\u00f8 wouldn\u2019t have been what it is without Steigeners,\u201d chuckles Odd Eirik Nikolaisen, who took charge of the company\u2019s 18 employees on 1 August.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Building stone by stone<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The Perfect Tempe\u00adrature Group (PTG) develops and delivers environment-friendly refri\u00adge\u00adration, freezing and energy-efficiency solutions. One of Norway\u2019s fastest-growing enter\u00adprises in its segment, it currently has 220 employees at 15 domestic locations as well as subsi\u00addiaries in Chile and Scotland.<\/p>\n

PTG is a substantial supplier to the retail sector in northern Norway as well as the seafood industry natio\u00adnally and inter\u00adna\u00adtio\u00adnally. It has been present in Bod\u00f8 since 2019, but the history of the company previously known as Multi Kulde extends much further back.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt began when four of us estab\u00adlished the Kulde\u00adservice company in Bod\u00f8 in 1999,\u201d says Andersen. \u201cWe\u2019ve built stone by stone since then. From a turnover of NOK 5 million in our first full operating year, we\u2019ve now passed NOK 40 million.\u201d<\/p>\n

Compe\u00adtitors for 15 years<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kulde\u00adservice became Multi Kulde, and later acquired Bogen Kj\u00f8le\u00adservice \u2013 which was owned and led by Nikolaisen. After 15 years as compe\u00adtitors, these two Steigeners joined forces to secure a stronger position in the market.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe smaller you are, the harder it is to stand along in these times,\u201d explains Nikolaisen. \u201cThat\u2019s also why we decided in 2019 to sell to PTG. I knew Mikael not least from my early years in Steigen, but nevert\u00adheless wondered what it would be like to work with him. It only took a couple of weeks from joining forces for me to feel that we\u2019d found the right tone and a good division of roles. This was quite simply a very good match.\u201d<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Becoming the boss\u2019s boss<\/strong><\/p>\n

Since then, Andersen has been Nikolaisen\u2019s boss. But they have colla\u00adbo\u00adrated well and, when it became clear that the CEO wanted to downscale to a sales engineer role in the company, Nikolaisen thought he might be the right person to replace him. The board agreed.<\/p>\n

\u201cMikael has involved me the whole time in decisions, and willingly shared both knowledge and experience,\u201d says Nikolaisen. \u201cWhile he comes from the engineer side, I became involved in the sector as a craftsman and refri\u00adge\u00adration installer. We\u2019ve therefore comple\u00admented each other well. He\u2019s built a well-oiled organi\u00adsation which is prospering in the market, with a very fine team of employees who function smoothly together.\u201d<\/p>\n

A sure thing<\/strong><\/p>\n

Despite the change of leadership, the new CEO promises that no immediate revolution is going to occur at PTG Multi Kulde.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe concept we\u2019ve built up with retail outlets in the region has been a success story for 15 years,\u201d he observes. \u201cWe\u2019ll therefore continue to make this our priority, while devel\u00adoping and adapting to the market. And we\u2019ll be working actively on recruitment. It\u2019s important to establish an early dialogue with school pupils and students in order to highlight the opport\u00adu\u00adnities available in the region.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople must have food, and in difficult times they buy even more in shops in order to cook at home. That makes working with refri\u00adge\u00adration services for the retail sector a sure thing,\u201d Andersen says with a smile.<\/p>\n

Cold motivation<\/strong><\/p>\n

The former CEO reveals at the same time that he is not quite finished with refri\u00adge\u00adration. In addition to retaining a job as a PTG sales engineer for four days a week, his dream is to use the extra free time to cross Greenland on foot. He has already done that, in 2015, and is keen to repeat the experience.<\/p>\n

Asked where this fasci\u00adnation with cold comes from, Andersen admits that it was a little accidental. \u201cWhen I was at engineering college in Trondheim during the 1990s, I heard about something called heat pumps. I found it very inter\u00ade\u00adsting that you could magic up heat from colder outdoor tempe\u00adra\u00adtures, and quickly under\u00adstood that this had to be the future.
